This self-paced course provides experienced underground coal mining personnel with the skills and knowledge required to apply, monitor, and contribute to the ongoing effectiveness of a strata management plan in an underground coal mining environment.
The unit is intended for experienced underground coal miners and supervisors who are responsible for identifying strata-related hazards, implementing controls, monitoring ground conditions, and ensuring compliance with site-specific strata management plans and legislative requirements.
The course focuses on recognising changes in strata conditions, applying trigger action response plans (TARPs), communicating hazards, and contributing to review and continuous improvement processes.

- The learner’s prior operational and supervisory experience in underground mining
- The learner’s commitment to completing learning activities, assessments, and forums
- Access to appropriate workplace tasks, equipment, and ventilation systems
- Availability of a workplace mentor or supervisor to support application of skills on site
Course Breakdown
Learners will be required to review a unit Study Guide and supplementary references and complete a series of theory questions (short answer), research assignments and site-based activities.

- Basic principles of strata, geological features and the effects of structure and stress on strata conditions.
- Effects of unstable mining, strata monitoring, inspection and emergency evacuation requirements.
The practical assessment requirements for this unit includes:
- Effectively plan and prepare a work activity relating to strata management, such as: 1. Installation of primary or secondary support. 2. Installation of strata monitoring device/s.
- Access, interpret and apply strata management plan documentation.
- Identify the human and physical resources required to complete the work activity.
- Identify and interpret the risks associated with unstable mining structures according to site requirements.
- Supervise the installation of strata support systems (e.g. primary / secondary support systems) and confirm correct installation according to site strata management documentation / requirements.
- Supervise the installation of strata monitoring devices (e.g. extensometer, tell-tale, rock-IT) and confirm correct installation according to site strata management documentation / requirements.
- Provide evidence of two (2) strata inspections / monitoring activities that were completed.
- Provide evidence of how potential strata support failures are managed on your site.
- Provide an example of where geological conditions / strata support issues during mining required remedial action response.
- Participate in an audit or review of the site's Strata Management Plan or related documents or processes.
- Provide evidence of monitoring activity where you have validated the application of a strata management related document
- Provide details of an inspection you carried out on strata monitoring and testing devices.

Issuance of Statements of Attainment (SOAs) and the Certificate IV Qualification
Learners will be issued with an SOAs on successful completion of the unit of competency.
This unit forms part of RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations. Learners who can complete this course can use it towards the completion of Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations
