Apply and monitor the inrush management plan

This self-paced course provides experienced underground coal mining personnel with the skills and knowledge required to apply, monitor, and contribute to the effective implementation of an inrush management plan in an underground coal mining environment.

The unit is intended for experienced underground coal miners and supervisors who are responsible for identifying inrush hazards (including water, mud, gas, or other materials), implementing control measures, monitoring conditions, and ensuring compliance with site-specific inrush management plans and legislative requirements.

The course focuses on recognising inrush risk indicators, applying trigger action response plans (TARPs), monitoring changing conditions, and contributing to reporting, review, and continuous improvement processes.

Course Duration

The course duration is estimated to be between 8 - 12 weeks.
Course duration may be impacted by various factors such as:

The learner’s prior operational and supervisory experience in underground mining
The learner’s commitment to completing learning activities, assessments, and forums
Access to appropriate workplace tasks, equipment, and ventilation systems
Availability of a workplace mentor or supervisor to support application of skills on site

Course Breakdown

Learners will be required to review a unit Study Guide and supplementary references and complete a series of theory questions (short answer), research assignments and site-based activities.

The unit includes various learning sections and assessment requirements, which are as follows:

Inrush Sources, Legislative Requirements, Risk and Control Measures.

The practical assessment requirements for this unit includes:

Access, interpret and apply inrush management plan documentation.
Identify the human and physical resources required to apply the inrush management plan
Provide details of the site procedures and processes that apply inrush monitoring and reporting processes, including a Deputy’s responsibilities.
Provide details of the site’s inrush controls that are in place (include each control’s hierarchy of control level and how they are monitored for effectiveness).
Provide details of the sites trigger action response plans relating to inrush (include the actions required – including Deputy’s responsibilities).
Assist or under Deputy’s supervision, inspect site equipment protection / defensive requirements and ensure they are compliant with inrush management plan and site requirements.
Participate in an audit or review of the site's Inrush Management Plan or related documents or processes.
Provide details of inspection, maintenance and repairs carried out and role in the activities.

The delivery method for the units of competency is online and self-paced, with support provided through online training resources and trainer check-ins.
This allows learners to work through the course material at their own pace and convenience, while also receiving guidance and support from qualified trainers.
The online format also enables learners to access the course material from anywhere with an internet connection, providing flexibility and convenience.

Issuance of Statements of Attainment (SOAs) and the Certificate IV Qualification

Learners will be issued with an SOAs on successful completion of the unit of competency.

This unit forms part of RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations. Learners who can complete this course can use it towards the completion of Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations
