Apply and monitor the gas management plan
This self-paced course equips experienced underground coal mining personnel with the skills and knowledge needed to apply and continuously monitor a gas management plan in accordance with site procedures and regulatory obligations. Participants will learn to interpret gas monitoring data, apply alarm and trigger responses, and manage gas-related risks within operational areas.

- The learner’s prior operational and supervisory experience in underground mining
- The learner’s commitment to completing learning activities, assessments, and forums
- Access to appropriate workplace tasks, equipment, and ventilation systems
- Availability of a workplace mentor or supervisor to support application of skills on site
Course Breakdown
Learners will be required to review a unit Study Guide and supplementary references and complete a series of theory questions (short answer), research assignments and site-based activities.

- Overview of gas management planning and site-specific procedures
- Gas monitoring systems, sampling methods and data interpretation
- Alarm and trigger level application and response protocols
- Control measures for gas management deviations
- Recording and reporting gas monitoring data
- Workplace communication and escalation processes
- Legislative and regulatory requirements related to gas management
The practical assessment requirements for this unit includes:
- Access, interpret and apply gas management plan documentation
- Complete a fresh air calibration on a gas detector
- Take two (2) gas readings in different locations.
- Record and report findings.
- Demonstrate / explain the process for reporting gas readings in accordance with site requirements
- Conduct (or under Deputy’s supervision) take a gas reading of the gases:
- Methane CH4
- Carbon Monoxide CO
- Carbon Dioxide CO2
- Hydrogen sulphide H2S
- Oxygen O2
- Demonstrate / explain the process to take a gas bag sample
- Explain a site's gas monitoring system
- Explain the actions taken in the event the following gas alarms
- Record and report monitoring system data according to site requirements
- Demonstrate / explain the process to install a gas management / monitoring device
- Inspect tube bundle and monitoring point
- Respond to alarms raised according to gas management plan and site requirements

The delivery method for the units of competency is online and self-paced, with support provided through online training resources and trainer check-ins.

Issuance of Statements of Attainment (SOAs) and the Certificate IV Qualification
Learners will be issued with an SOAs on successful completion of the unit of competency.
This unit forms part of RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations. Learners who can complete this course can use it towards the completion of Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations
