Apply & monitor the ventilation management plan

This extensive, self-paced course is designed to equip experienced underground mining personnel with the knowledge and practical skills required to apply, monitor, and contribute to the ongoing effectiveness of a ventilation management plan in coal and metalliferous mining environments.

The program is intended for experienced underground miners and supervisors who are involved in a broad range of operational activities within their designated work areas and who hold responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment for themselves and others.

The course focuses on the application of mine ventilation and atmosphere monitoring systems, identification and control of ventilation-related hazards (including spontaneous combustion where applicable), and compliance with site-specific ventilation management plans.

Course Duration

The course duration is estimated to be between 8 - 12 weeks.
Course duration may be impacted by various factors such as:

The learner’s prior operational and supervisory experience in underground mining
The learner’s commitment to completing learning activities, assessments, and forums
Access to appropriate workplace tasks, equipment, and ventilation systems
Availability of a workplace mentor or supervisor to support application of skills on site

Course Breakdown

Learners will be required to review a unit Study Guide and supplementary references and complete a series of theory questions (short answer), research assignments and site-based activities.

The unit includes various learning sections and assessment requirements, which are as follows:

Ventilation System Principles, Factors and Impacts of Mining
Ventilation Devices, Ventilation Planning Considerations and Dust Control
Gas Drainage, Sealing and Ventilation Monitoring

The practical assessment requirements for this unit includes:

Access, interpret and apply ventilation management plan documentation.
Identify the human and physical resources required to complete ventilation work activities.
Install two (2) ventilation control device according to site's ventilation management documentation.
Adjust two (2) ventilation control device according to site's ventilation management documentation.
Test mine atmosphere using hand-held monitoring equipment according to site requirements.
Record and report ventilation monitoring system data according to site requirements.
Respond to alarms raised according to ventilation management plan and site requirements.
Apply ventilation emergency and evacuation procedures according to ventilation management plan and site requirements.
Contribute to an audit or review of the site's Ventilation Management Plan or related documents or processes.
Provide details of an inspection you carried out on ventilation systems.

The delivery method for the units of competency is online and self-paced, with support provided through online training resources and trainer check-ins.
This allows learners to work through the course material at their own pace and convenience, while also receiving guidance and support from qualified trainers.
The online format also enables learners to access the course material from anywhere with an internet connection, providing flexibility and convenience.

Issuance of Statements of Attainment (SOAs) and the Certificate IV Qualification

Learners will be issued with an SOAs on successful completion of the unit of competency.

This unit forms part of RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations. Learners who can complete this course can use it towards the completion of Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations
